How much did you say it would cost? - $5,000 million dollars?!
Despite the State Government saying for two years that the desalination plant would cost $3.1 billion (despite the Auditor General querying this), and them now saying $3.5 billion (now that the contracts have been signed), Tony Shephard, the chairman of AquaSure, the company to build, operate and profit from the plant, says $4.8 billion! That’s a 55% blowout on the figure the government has been giving us for two years! And that all has to be paid for by us, through our water bills and taxes (remember it isn’t the Government who’s paying for this, it’s us!). The economists say this equates to a water delivered cost of nearly $5.00 per kilolitre, or about five times the current cost of water, and this might not be the end of the cost blowouts either (consider the likely increase in the cost of electricity alone over the next ten years)!
